Salmon - Salmonidae

Most species of fish that live in fresh water habitats of Kamchatka are representatives of three genera of the salmon family that include the Pacific salmon, pacific noble salmon and char.

The genus Oncorhynchus – the Pacific (Far Eastern) salmon

Species of this genus have relatively small scales, big mouth with developed teeth and a long anal fn with 10-16 rays.

All Pacific salmons spawn in rivers, streams, and lakes in summer-fall period where they migrate after fattening in the Pacific Ocean. It is an lithophilous ecological group of fish who dig their row and every species has it's own places for spawning and fattening which are rather frequently overlapped.

The roe develops within several months of summer-fall period. Then hatched alevins get out of knolls and start floating. Having turned into fries, the salmon stay in fresh water for the next 1-3 years or get down to sea.

Marine life period of different species lasts from 1.5 to 8 years.

Homing feeling guides the Pacific salmon into their native water body to the same spawning ground which they left as alevins. After spawning the salmon die there.

It is the difference of Pacific salmon and others like European salmon, Kamchatkan salmon, Rainbow trout, East Siberian char, char and others who spawn up to three times.

Kamchatka is the only place on the globe with ideal conditions preserved for reproduction of these ancient residents of the Earth and all 6 species of the Pacific salmon spawn there.
